Module 7: Nutrition

In Module 7, we learned how good food choices are made, define obesity and health risks, nutritional guidelines, types of food that should be avoided, how food advertisements and cost influence food choices, and different fad diets and health risks.

To start off, obesity is a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. If a person's body weight is at least 20% or higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. Many issues with overeating are also associated with obesity. These include:
  • High blood pressure
  • Excess cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stoke
  • Certain cancers
  • Breathing problems
  • Sleeping Issues
Next, when choosing healthy food, you want to make sure you choose nutrient dense foods. Nutrient dense foods are foods that have high vitamin and mineral content. Foods like vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds are examples of foods that are nutrient dense.
You want to avoid foods that have "empty" calories in your diet. Foods with "empty' calories have sparse amounts of nutrients per calorie in them. Soda is a great example of an empty calorie food.

Foods also containing high amounts or trans-fat and saturated fats should also be avoided. Another huge problem is something called high fructose corn syrup. This is a very sweet additive use to improve flavor and sweetness of products. This one ingredient is thought to be leading to contributor to the diabetes and blood sugar related diseases.

Moving onto food advertisements. Marketing companies are brilliant at getting people to buy things, which can have serious consequences when it comes to food choices. Advertising and peer pressure can influence a person to eat unhealthy food. This, in turn, can negatively affect your bodies functions.
Another cause of poor nutritional choices is the cost of food. In a study, they found that for a person on a 2,000-calorie per day diet, the cost to eat healthy food is only $1.50 more per day compared to choosing unhealthy food.

Lastly, let's talk about Fad Diets. A Fad diet is a diet that promises quick weight loss through what is actually an unhealthy and unbalanced diet. These diets target people who want to lose weight quickly without exercise. Some fad diets claim that you will loose fat, but in reality you are really losing water weight.
Fad diets also have risks like:
  • Dehydration
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Inadequate vitamin and mineral intake
Examples of different fad diets would be:

  • Atkins
  • Paleo
  • Keto
  • Raw Food
  • Alkaline
  • Cabbage soup
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon Detox
  • HCG
  • Tapeworm
